Upgrading 101, UPDATED for TH12

There has always been a lot of questions regarding what should I upgrade next, and what is best for war weight ranking?

This guide was updated to reflect changes to the game that came in an update shortly after the release of town hall 12.

Before going to Town Hall 10 or higher, please ask for a base review from Elders, even if you are an Elder.  It is easy to miss things and a review could identify items that will make your transition more successful.

1. Start upgrading OFFENSE immediately. The Clan Castle, Laboratory and Army camps should be among highest on offensive list, followed by barracks and factories.  Anything to help you bring MORE to the war is considered offense. Try to keep troop upgrading as continuous as possible and start a troop upgrade just before the laboratory to take advantage of the only time we can double dip in the upgrade process.

2. Keep the Laboratory as busy as possible so troop/spell upgrading is continuous. When Dragons become available, they should be an early upgrade choice for TH8 and TH7. If you only have enough resources to do a structure or a troop/spell, ALWAYS pick the troop or spell first. 3 or more builders can upgrade everything at TH8 before the laboratory can.

3. Upgrade storage. Some new things are so expensive, expanding storage will be the only way to get enough resources to start the upgrade.

4. Beef up resource collection. The more resources you have coming in, the less you will have to farm for them. This is a natural choice unless you want to attack continuously as a means for income.

5. Traps and walls can be intermixed with above upgrades as resources afford the opportunity. Maxing all traps is a good idea at all town hall levels.

6. Walls are NOT a priority, but are a good way to keep the gold storage's from over flowing. Walls are often misunderstood.  Please review the huge difference between adding a new wall vs upgrading an existing section of wall.

  • New walls are about 8x heavier than upgrading a level 5 or higher wall.

  • Upgrading walls to level 2 is just as heavy as adding a new wall.

  • Upgrading walls to level 3 adds about 50% less weight than level 2.

  • Upgrading walls to level 4 adds even less weight than previous level.

  • Upgrading a wall section from level 5 to level 13 is about the same as adding 1 new section of wall.

This is why upgrading existing walls is much better for keeping war weight lower.

7. Everything changed on the town hall 12 update.  Instead of listing all the recommended upgrades in order, there is a simple rule of thumb to answer the question of; should I add [defense name]?

ANSWER:   If you can kill it, you can add it.

8.Until your troops are strong enough to 3 star your mirror in war, it is best to let remaining defenses lag a couple levels behind their max levels.  See Wiki for unit level info for each town hall.

NOTES:

Defenses on the get approval first list include;  Inferno Towers, and Eagle Artillery
